Custom Concrete Patios in Nashville

Most patios are poured as an afterthought. We design them as outdoor architecture, drainage-planned, finish-selected, PSIP-built to last the life of the property.

What's Included

Every Custom Concrete Patios Project Includes

Grade & Drainage First

Every patio design begins with a grade analysis to ensure water moves away from your foundation and off the surface efficiently. Poor drainage destroys slabs from below and creates ice hazards in winter.

California Finish Options

California Sand Finish, exposed aggregate, integral color, stained concrete, and broom finish, all available on a PSIP structural base. We recommend finish based on your architecture, sun exposure, and use patterns.

Control Joint Engineering

Control joints aren't just cut wherever convenient, they're laid out to manage where the slab cracks as it cures and moves, keeping visible cracking within designed joints rather than random fractures across the surface.

Why It Matters

How We Deliver Custom Concrete Patios

1

Design Consultation

We evaluate your outdoor space, grade, drainage, sun exposure, adjacency to pool or structure, and discuss how you use the space before making any finish or size recommendation.

2

Drainage & Grade Engineering

Grade is designed to direct water away from your home and off the slab efficiently. Any drainage infrastructure required is specified at this stage.

3

PSIP Base & Structural Pour

Sub-base preparation, rebar grid on chair rails, fiber mesh, and 4000 PSI pump-poured concrete, the same structural standard as every Pumas Concrete project.

Concrete Patio Contractors in Nashville, TN

Nashville homeowners searching for a concrete patio contractor encounter a wide range of quality, and an even wider range of documentation about what they’re actually buying. Pumas Concrete installs concrete patios across Nashville and Middle Tennessee to the PSIP Protocol: drainage engineering before forming begins, control joints laid out to manage cracking, PSIP structural base with 4,000 PSI mix and full rebar grid, and finish selection from California Sand Finish to exposed aggregate, integral color, and broom finish.

We serve Nashville, Brentwood, Franklin, Murfreesboro, Spring Hill, Nolensville, Hendersonville, and the surrounding areas. Every Nashville patio project receives a Structural Longevity Certificate at completion.

Why Patio Design Starts With Drainage, Not Decorative Finish

A concrete patio that pools water after rain, heaves after the first hard freeze, or cracks within three years isn’t a bad-luck outcome. It’s an engineering failure that began before the first yard of concrete was ordered. Pumas Concrete designs patios from the ground up, grade analysis, drainage planning, structural specification, then finish selection. The California Sand Finish or exposed aggregate surface you want is the final step in a process that begins with making sure the slab beneath it will last.

Grade and drainage first. Every patio design begins with a grade analysis to ensure water moves away from your foundation and off the surface efficiently. Poor drainage destroys slabs from below and creates ice hazards in Middle Tennessee winters. A sloped slab that directs water correctly is a structural decision, not an aesthetic one.

Control joint engineering. Control joints aren’t just cut wherever convenient, they’re laid out to manage where the slab cracks as it cures and moves seasonally. An engineered joint layout keeps visible cracking within designed channels rather than across the visible surface of the patio. On a California Sand Finish patio, joint layout is also a design element, the lines can be planned to reinforce the geometry of the space.

Finish on structure. California Sand Finish, exposed aggregate, integral color, stained concrete, and broom finish are all available, but each is applied over a PSIP structural base. The finish selection happens after the drainage and structural specification is determined, not before. A decorative choice that requires specific structural conditions gets those conditions specified first.

Who this is for. Homeowners who have had patios crack, heave, or pond water, and want to understand why before they build again. Property owners extending living space outdoors who want the indoor design attention applied to the outdoor surface. If you’re investing in an outdoor kitchen, a fire pit, or a pool surround, the concrete beneath it deserves the same planning as the structures above it.

FAQ

Custom Concrete Patios. Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about custom concrete patios in Nashville, TN.

California Sand Finish and exposed aggregate both perform excellently in Middle Tennessee's freeze-thaw climate when applied over a PSIP structural base. Smooth-troweled finishes are more vulnerable to surface spalling in freeze-thaw cycles. We recommend finish based on your specific site, sun exposure, and aesthetic priorities after the site evaluation.

Yes. We design patios to integrate with adjacent hardscape elements, including pool surrounds, outdoor kitchens, and fire pit areas. The critical element is ensuring consistent drainage planning and that structural joints between elements are engineered, not left to chance.

The concrete-to-foundation joint is one of the most important, and most overlooked, details in patio installation. We engineer an isolation joint at the foundation line to allow independent movement between the slab and the structure. Without this, foundation movement telegraphs directly into the slab and causes cracking.

We recommend light foot traffic after 24-48 hours and full use after 28 days, which is the standard cure period for concrete to reach design strength. We do not recommend placing heavy furniture or any vehicle on the surface before the 28-day mark.

The primary causes are: insufficient control joints allowing the slab to crack uncontrolled during curing, absence of isolation joints allowing foundation movement to transfer into the slab, poor drainage allowing water to penetrate and freeze below the surface, and underspec concrete, typically 3000 PSI, that lacks the compressive strength to resist Tennessee's freeze-thaw cycle.

PSIP-spec concrete outperforms pavers in structural longevity and requires far less maintenance over time. Pavers shift, settle, and develop drainage problems as the base erodes. A properly installed concrete patio on a PSIP base is a monolithic, stable surface for the life of the property.
