Colored & Stained Concrete in Nashville
Surface-applied colorants fade and chip. Integral color is mixed through the full concrete body, so the color you see on day one is the same color you'll see after twenty years of traffic.
Every Colored & Stained Concrete Project Includes
Integral Color: Permanent Through-Body
Integral pigments are added to the concrete mix before pouring, distributing color through the full slab thickness. Surface wear, chips, and joint edges all reveal the same color, there is no substrate color showing through.
Surface Staining: Chemical Reaction or Penetrating
Acid stains chemically react with lime compounds in concrete to create variegated, translucent color, the most natural-looking surface coloring technique. Water-based penetrating stains provide more predictable, consistent tones. Both require proper surface preparation and sealing.
PSIP Structure Below Every Color
Color is only as durable as the concrete beneath it. We do not apply decorative colorants over underspec concrete. Every colored surface we build rests on a 4000 PSI, full rebar PSIP foundation.

How We Deliver Colored & Stained Concrete
Color Consultation
We discuss color direction, sample options, and the distinction between integral color and staining approaches. Samples and completed project references are provided for evaluation.
Surface Specification
The finish specification, including color type, sealer selection, and joint treatment, is documented before any site work begins.
PSIP Structural Build
Base prep, rebar grid, and 4000 PSI pour proceed to the full PSIP standard regardless of the color specification above.
Color Application
Integral color is added to the mix at the batch plant. Surface stain is applied after full cure to a properly prepared surface.
Sealing & Certification
The correct sealer for the color type and surface exposure is applied after full cure. Structural Longevity Certificate issued.
Discuss Your ProjectWhy Color Source Determines Long-Term Appearance
Colored concrete covers two technically distinct approaches: integral color, which is dispersed through the full concrete mix before pouring, and surface staining, which penetrates or chemically reacts with the surface after the pour. Both produce dramatically different results in durability, appearance, and maintenance. Pumas Concrete offers both options with honest guidance on which approach is appropriate for your surface type, exposure conditions, and long-term maintenance expectations. Neither is applied over anything less than a full PSIP structural base.
Integral color: permanent through the body. Integral pigments are added to the concrete mix before pouring, distributing color through the full slab thickness. Surface wear, chips, and joint edges all reveal the same color, there is no substrate color showing through. For high-traffic driveways and areas subject to surface abrasion, integral color is the more durable choice because the color source is not at the surface.
Acid staining: chemical reaction, not coating. Acid stains react chemically with lime compounds in concrete to create permanent, translucent color with natural variation that reads as stone-like and architectural. The variation is not a flaw, it is the characteristic that distinguishes acid stain from uniform painted finishes. The stain cannot peel because it has become part of the concrete surface chemistry.
Sealing for Tennessee’s climate. The sealer over any colored concrete surface in Middle Tennessee’s climate must be selected carefully: breathable enough to allow moisture vapor transmission during freeze-thaw cycles, UV-stable enough to protect color in direct sun, and appropriate for the traffic load. The wrong sealer turns chalky, delaminates, or traps moisture that causes spalling. We specify sealer to the surface, not a default product for every application.
PSIP structure underneath every color. Color is a finish. A finish applied over underspec concrete is a decoration on a structure that will fail on its own timeline. Every colored or stained surface we build rests on 4000 PSI concrete, full rebar reinforcement, and SSD base preparation, so the color investment is protected by the structure beneath it.

Colored & Stained Concrete. Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about colored & stained concrete in Nashville, TN.
Integral color is highly UV-stable, iron oxide pigments are among the most light-fast colorants in construction. Properly sealed and maintained integral-color concrete holds its appearance for decades. The key is appropriate sealer maintenance, a sealed surface protects both color intensity and the concrete surface from UV and freeze-thaw attack.
Paint or opaque coating sits on the surface and peels. Acid stain chemically reacts with the concrete matrix to create permanent, translucent color that cannot peel because it is part of the concrete surface, not a coating on top of it. The appearance is fundamentally different, acid stain creates natural variation and depth that reads as architectural.
We can target a color direction through integral pigment selection and can provide sample pours before the project begins. Exact color matching to a specific material, brick, stone, or siding, is difficult because concrete color shifts as it cures and weathers. We advise on achievable color relationships and provide sample boards before finalizing selection.
Integral color adds a modest cost per cubic yard to the concrete mix. Acid staining requires surface preparation, application, and sealing labor on top of the structural concrete cost. Both are more cost-effective than adding stone or tile overlays and provide comparable or superior durability when applied over a PSIP structural base.
