Nashville’s outdoor living market is one of the most active in the Southeast. New home construction, backyard renovation, and estate property development all drive demand for masonry and hardscape work, and the range of quality on offer is wide.

Pumas Concrete’s masonry work is built to the same structural standard as our concrete work. Paver installations go on compacted, engineered bases. Stone features are set on poured concrete footings where load or height requires it. Drainage is engineered into the layout before any material is placed.

Paver Patios and Walkways

Paver patios and walkways are among the most common hardscape requests in Nashville’s residential market. The installation quality varies dramatically based on what goes under the pavers: a properly engineered aggregate base versus a minimal sand bed.

We install paver patios on compacted aggregate base with appropriate depth for the application (typically 6-8 inches of compacted gravel), a layer of bedding sand, and interlocking pavers set to a drainage pitch of at minimum 1/8 inch per foot away from the structure. Edge restraint is mechanically fastened, not just staked.

For walkways that see regular foot traffic or face freeze-thaw exposure, we evaluate whether a poured concrete base (with pavers set in mortar or as a thin veneer) is a better long-term solution than a sand-set system.

Paver Driveways

Paver driveways are popular in Nashville’s luxury residential market for their aesthetic flexibility and the ability to replace individual units if damage occurs. The structural demands on a driveway surface, including vehicle weight, seasonal movement, and drainage, require a base engineered specifically for vehicular loads.

Our paver driveway bases are built to carry the weight of passenger vehicles and light trucks without rutting or settling. Base depth, geotextile placement, and drainage routing are determined during the site evaluation.

Stone Patios and Flagstone Walkways

Natural stone patios and flagstone walkways bring texture and character to outdoor spaces. We install stone surfaces in two ways depending on the application: dry-laid (set in a sand-aggregate base without mortar) for informal paths and low-traffic areas, and wet-set (set in mortar over a concrete base) for patios, entries, and surfaces that need to stay level under regular use and weather cycling.

Wet-set stone over a poured concrete base is the specification we recommend for any stone patio in Middle Tennessee. The freeze-thaw cycle and clay soil movement make dry-laid stone patios vulnerable to shifting and heaving without a structural base.

Hardscaping and Outdoor Living

Combined outdoor living projects, including patios, walkways, steps, retaining walls, and outdoor features designed as a cohesive space, are our largest masonry projects. We approach these as structural engineering first, design second: drainage routing, elevation changes, structural connections, and load points are all resolved before surface material selection begins.
