Every California Sand Finish Project Includes
Taught Directly, on Real Jobs
brought the tools, walked the crew through the aggregate differences that matter in this climate and the base hydration step almost nobody here gets right, and poured it with them start to finish. Pumas is the first Tennessee crew taught the method.
A Structural Foundation Underneath
No decorative finish applied over a weak base. Every California Sand Finish project begins with high-strength mix, a full rebar grid on chair rails, and engineered base preparation before the finishing process begins.
Transferable Certification
Your project documentation documents the specific finishing technique, mix specification, and reinforcement method, a record that communicates quality to future buyers and property appraisers.

How We Deliver Decorative & Stamped Concrete
Site & Design Evaluation
We assess grade, drainage, architectural context, and sun exposure. California Sand Finish reads differently depending on orientation and light, we account for this before recommending it.
Base Engineering
Sub-base is excavated, compacted, and pre-hydrated. SSD (saturated surface dry) base preparation prevents the slab from drawing moisture from fresh concrete, a step most Tennessee contractors skip entirely.
Structural Pour
High-strength mix, pump-poured. Full rebar grid elevated on chair rails plus fiber mesh reinforcement. No shortcuts at this stage, the finish is only as durable as what's beneath it.
California Hand-Finishing
The timing of the finishing process is critical. Applied by trained crew members to the exact consistency and texture that defines the California Sand profile, not approximated.
Cure & Walkthrough
Proper curing time is non-negotiable. After cure, we document and issue the project documentation recording every spec applied to your project.

A Method We Were Taught, Not a Product We Bought
California Sand Finish is a hand-applied technique that exposes fine sand aggregate in a controlled, uniform pattern. Most contractors advertising something like it are applying a product off a shelf. We are pouring a method.
Where it came from
It was developed in California about thirty years ago with nothing more than a pour and an acid wash. It had no name and no product behind it for years. The original method came east to Tennessee and picked up the name it carries now.
How the crew learned it
Hands on, on real jobs, start to finish. Not a video and not a spec sheet. Our crew is the first in Tennessee taught the method directly.
The slab underneath comes first
High-strength mix, full rebar grid on chair rails, pre-hydrated base, pump-poured. No decorative finish over a weak slab, ever.
The Other Finishes We Pour
Stamped
The bad reputation is earned by patterns applied over undersized slabs. We build the structure first, then place control joints inside the pattern along grout lines, so a joint never runs through the middle of a stamped stone.
Integral colour
Pigment through the full mix, so chips and joint edges show the same colour. The durable choice anywhere the surface will get scratched.
Acid stain
A chemical reaction rather than a coating, so it cannot peel. Gives variegated, stone-like tone with natural variation.
Exposed aggregate
The most timing-sensitive finish we pour. Expose too early and the paste will not hold the stone; too late and it is unworkable. We specify the stone rather than exposing whatever the batch plant sent.
Choosing Between Them
Most people arrive wanting one finish and leave having picked another, because the right answer depends on where the surface sits and what it has to survive.
Sand finish
for anything walked on barefoot or seen close up: pool decks, patios, entries.
Stamped
where you want the read of stone or brick across a large area and will maintain a sealer.
Integral colour
where the surface will get chipped, because colour runs all the way through.
Acid stain
for mottled tone with depth, on interiors and covered outdoor areas.
Exposed aggregate
where grip matters and the surface takes weather without much attention.
Sealing for This Climate
Whatever goes on top, the sealer has to be breathable enough to pass moisture vapour through freeze-thaw cycles, UV-stable enough to hold colour in direct sun, and rated for the traffic. The wrong sealer turns chalky, delaminates, or traps moisture and causes spalling. We specify it to the surface rather than defaulting to one product.
What Happens When You Call
We look at the space, the light, the architecture it sits against, and what the surface has to put up with. Then we tell you which finishes genuinely suit it, including when a plain broom finish is the right call and the money is better spent on the base.
You see samples before anything is poured, and the finish is written into the price.

Decorative & Stamped Concrete. Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about decorative & stamped concrete in Nashville, TN.
Standard broom finish is a utility texture, functional, common, and architecturally neutral. California Sand Finish is a refined, smooth surface that exposes fine aggregate in a subtle, consistent pattern. It reads as contemporary and intentional. On a modern Nashville home, it is the difference between a floor and a finished surface.
It was developed in California roughly thirty years ago, worked out with a pour and a muriatic acid wash. For years it had no name and no product behind it. Other companies eventually turned the idea into off-the-shelf products under various names. The original method was brought east to Tennessee and gave it the name it carries today, and he taught it to the Pumas crew himself.
No. The aggregate exposure creates a surface texture that provides traction comparable to a fine broom finish, without the pronounced ridges. It is appropriate for driveways, pool decks, patios, and entryways, all surfaces that see wet foot traffic.
No. It is an integral part of the finishing process applied to fresh concrete at a precise stage of cure. It cannot be overlaid onto existing concrete. If you have an existing slab, we evaluate whether a full replacement or surface overlay with a different finish is appropriate.
Because the method is transferred hand to hand, not from a manual or a product bag. The timing, the pressure, the aggregate choice, and the base hydration step have to be taught by someone who has done it. taught the Pumas crew directly, on real jobs that were documented as they happened. No other contractor in this market has that lineage.
California Sand Finish costs more than broom finish, not because of the surface technique alone, but because it is applied over a documented structural foundation that uses high-strength mix, full rebar grid on chair rails, and SSD base preparation. The relevant comparison is not our cost versus a standard pour.
