Overview
A stamped concrete patio in Mount Juliet, Wilson County, built as a circular outdoor room on a back lot that fell away from the house. The finished surface is a fieldstone pattern in a warm sienna tone, ringed by a smooth contrasting border, with a matching walkway running back to the deck stairs so the patio connects to the house instead of sitting on its own in the yard.
The Challenge
The yard dropped continuously from the rear of the house toward the fence line, so there was no flat ground to build on. Wilson County sits on Central Basin limestone that often runs shallow, which means excavation depth can change across a single footprint, and a circular shape gives you no straight edges to true off. On top of that, a stamped surface shows every flaw in the slab underneath it, so the base had to be right before anyone thought about pattern.
How We Built It
We cut the circle into the slope and built a compacted gravel base to a consistent depth across the whole footprint, checking for rock as we went. Circular forms were set and the pour was reinforced rather than relying on the pattern for strength. The fieldstone texture was stamped while the concrete was in its finishing window, then sienna color was worked in by hand across the field, with a smooth band left around the perimeter so the pattern reads as deliberate rather than running off the edge. The slab was sealed once it had cured, with the sealer chosen for sun exposure and freeze-thaw rather than off the shelf.
The Result
A level, usable outdoor room on ground that previously could not be walked on comfortably, draining away from the house rather than toward it. The border and the connecting walkway give the patio a finished edge, and the sealed fieldstone surface holds its color through Middle Tennessee sun and winters.
