Gumaro Rivera arrived in California in 2006 with a trade background and a dissatisfaction with the concrete he had seen built to fail. For two years he worked in high-end residential concrete in Malibu, Beverly Hills, and Bel Air, learning hand-applied finishing and, more importantly, the structural philosophy behind it: that decorative concrete placed on a weak foundation is expensive landscaping, not construction.

When Gumaro Rivera brought Pumas Concrete to Nashville, he made a deliberate choice not to adapt down to the local standard. Tennessee's residential concrete market had settled into a predictable failure cycle: 3000 PSI mix, wire mesh placed flat at grade, no engineered base preparation, no documentation. Driveways were cracking within five years. Homeowners were replacing surfaces they'd been told would last a lifetime. Gumaro built Pumas Concrete around a formal, documented standard that directly answers that failure cycle.

The California Sand Finish came later, and it did not come from Malibu. It was developed in California roughly thirty years ago with a pour and a muriatic acid wash, and for years it had no name and no product behind it. The original method was brought east to Tennessee and taught to this crew directly: the tools, the aggregate differences that matter in this climate, and the base hydration step almost nobody here gets right. Pumas is the first crew in Tennessee taught the method directly, on jobs documented as they happened.

That standard is now written down and applied to every job: what goes into the base, how the reinforcement is placed, what the mix is, and how the surface is finished. Every project is documented against it, so the quality is not something a homeowner has to take on trust.
