Overview
A colored concrete patio in Cameron Park, Nashville, poured as one large-format slab behind a brick home in Davidson County. The layout uses wide panels and a minimal joint pattern rather than a busy stamp, so the surface reads as a single clean outdoor floor running the width of the back elevation.
The Challenge
The back yard sloped away from the house into red Davidson County clay, the kind that holds water and moves with the season. A patio this size poured flat against a foundation on that soil is the classic setup for cracking along the house line and ponding at the low corner. The homeowner also wanted the surface to look intentional rather than patterned, which puts all the pressure on joint layout and color consistency across a large area.
How We Built It
Grade and drainage were worked out before a single form went down, so the finished surface sheds away from the foundation. The base was excavated, compacted and pre-hydrated before the pour, and the slab was reinforced at mid-slab depth rather than with mesh laid on the ground. Concrete was placed, screeded and bull-floated by a crew working the whole panel at once, so the finish stayed consistent edge to edge. Integral color went through the mix rather than onto the surface, and the joint plan was set against the geometry of the house before forming.
The Result
A single large outdoor surface with color that goes all the way through, joints that fall where they were planned, and fall that carries water off the slab and away from the brick. Because the color is integral, chips and joint edges show the same tone rather than exposing grey underneath.
